Medicare Supplement Plan
A Medicare supplement plan is a type of health insurance policy that
covers the "gaps" in a Medicare insurance plan. These "gaps" refer to
the cost that your plan does not cover, for example co-insurance,
co-payments and deductibles. A supplemental plan like this is extremely
useful in helping you save unnecessary out-of-pocket costs. Most supplemental policies can be bought from private insurance
companies. These plans, however, are strictly governed by federal and
state laws set in place to protect the insured - you. Because strict
laws have been enforced, companies are only allowed to sell a maximum of
12 varying policies that work in conjunction with the original Medicare
health plan.
Due to the nature of the supplement plan - coverage of "gaps" - these
policies are also often referred to as Medigap. All Medigap insurance
should provide the same basic protection. This will include covering for
any hospital stay that exceeds 60 days; for example, if you have to stay
more than 60 days in the hospital, your Medigap could pay your bill from
day 61 up to day 150. On top of the basic benefits of a Medigap policy,
each plan offered by individual companies can differ depending on your
projected specific need.
Some supplement plans may give you coverage to help you defray
nursing home costs while others may offer protection over any emergency
health care required while traveling out of the country. The specifics
of each policy will depend on the insurance company you choose to
purchase your plan from and the premium required will also differ based
on the company selling the policy as well as on your age, where you
live, your overall health status and other personal criteria.
It is important to take some time to review the various policies
being presented to you because you will need to choose a plan most
suited for your specific needs. Do not go on impulse and purchase the
first plan that sounds good because you may end up with coverage that
might not be relevant to you at all. This will lead to a waste of money
and inadequate coverage on your health care needs. A good Medicare
supplement plan should be able take care of any out-of-pocket costs
not covered by your original Medicare insurance policy such that you
will need to pay a minimal sum (or nothing at all) on your health care
needs.
